| The
German organ-building firm of Wilhelm Sauer in Frankfurt an der Oder was
established in 1857. Wilhelm Sauer (1831-1916) was taught by his father, Ernst Sauer, receiving further training in France, England and Switzerland. He acquired much of his ability as an organ builder during the periods when he was employed by Walcker (Ludwigsburg) and Cavaillé-Coll (Paris). In Wilhelm Sauer's lifetime the firm was among the European élite, and today the romantic-symphonic Sauer organs of this period are treated with the utmost respect and veneration. The Sauer organ in St. Peter's Church, Copenhagen (q.v.), was built in 1938, shortly before the firm ceased to build new organs (the majority of the staff, which numbered over 100 people, were called up for military service). It is strongly characterized by attempts made in the 1930s to develop organ building in the direction of the ideals of the baroque era, and in this respect it is an interesting testimony to the state of German organ building just before the Second World War. |
